Charles E. Sorensen

Charles Sorensen was the mastermind and key developer of the moving assembly line at Ford Motor Company.  He played a major role in winning World War II.  Mr. Sorensen owned over 1,100 acres of land in Lyon Township.  In the post-war period, he designed and led the development of unique agricultural equipment while at Willys Overland Jeep Company.

At the Willow Run Bomber Plant,by the end of 1943, 42,000 men and women were employed to make the B-24 bombers.  Mr. Sorensen was instrumental in designing the plant and processes to produce an unheard of one bomber per hour, compared to one a day by the aircraft industry.  The B-24 final assembly line at Willow Run in Ypsilanti, Michigan was the largest manufacturing plant in the world.  It covered 3,500,000 square feet of floor area.

Mr. Sorensen had property investment throughout the country, in addition to his 1,100 acres in Lyon Township.  These holdings, outlined in red, were primarily along Milford Road, across Grand River to the north and 11 Mile Road to the south.  It included eight to ten farm houses, with barns and silos.  They were managed by Albert Kessler and known as CESOR Farms (a contraction of Sorensen's name.)  He started to acquire this property around 1930 and divested himself by the mid-1950's after his retirement from Willys Overland Jeep Company in Toledo, Ohio.
