John M. Bell

Return to: Parks and Recreation

John Bell moved to Lyon Township in 1974.  He began to get involved in community affairs in 1976, heading a Community Cable Authority in an effort to bring cable TV into our community.

On September 9, 1980, the Lyon Township Board of Trustees appointed John to the Planning Commission.  While serving on the Planning Commission, John would produce the Commission's year-end report.  On February 21, 1995, he was elected Planning Commission Vice-Chairperson.  On November 12, 1996, he was elected Planning Commission Chairperson, a position he held until October 1, 1998.  In addition to being a member of the Cable TV Commitee, John was President of the Library Board.

John retired from Ford Motor Company in 2000 after working 43 and a half years.  After retirement, he began exploring the history of Lyon Township and the South Lyon area, becoming known as our local authority on the history of our community.

John started the Lyon Township Kite Festival in 2009.  He was appointed to the Downtown Development Authority (DDA) on January 5, 2009, where he continues to serve and is currently Vice-Chairperson.  On August 3, 2013, the DDA appointed John to serve as the liaison to the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board.  John also serves on the Board of Directors for the Lyon Events Organization (LEO).

John has been so diligent in obtaining more and more history of the area that he was asked by the Lyon Township Board in 2012 to research and write a history book of Lyon Township.  He energetically took on the project, and the book went into print by the Arcadia Publishing Company in 2013.  To date, the publisher has sold over 1,500 books.  In April of 2015, John was honored by the Chamber of Commerce for the South Lyon Area with a Lifetime Achievement Award.
