Which codes do the Charter Township of Lyon enforce?

The Zoning Enforcement Officer enforces the Lyon Township Code of Ordinances, the Lyon Township Zoning Ordinance, and the International Property Maintenance Code.  For violations of building code, please contact the Lyon Township Building Department at 248-437-2252.

Do I need a permit for a garage sale or yard sale?

No permit is required for garage or yard sales in the Township.  Two signs are permitted with a maximum sign area of two square feet and a maximum height of five feet.  Signs must be located on private property with permission from the owner and cannot be located in public road right-of-ways.  Signs are permitted to be up for four days and must be removed once the garage or yard sale is over.

Do I need a permit to construct a fence?

No permit is needed to construct a fence, but the installation of all fences shall comply with the requirements listed in Section 12.16 of the Zoning Ordinance.

Do I need a permit to install a sign?

The installation of most types of signs require a permit.   Please contact the Lyon Township Building Department at 248-437-2252 for more information.

Do I need a permit to burn leaves?

No burning of leaves is allowed.  You may burn small brush piles only.  Lyon Township allows open burning year round, but a permit must be obtained first.    For a burn permit, you must go to Fire Station #1 during regular business hours.  The permit is free and good for one year.

Please note that the Fire Department has the right to ask you to extinguish an open burn, even with a valid permit, if the burn is determined to be offensive or objectionable due to smoke, odor, or particle emissions when conditions or local circumstances make the fire hazardous, or when burning would be in violation of codes and rules. 

No open burning is allowed on commercial property.

Can my neighbor run a business from his or her home?

A resident in Lyon Township may run a business from his or her home.  However, any business must follow the Home Occupations requirements listed in Section 12.05 A of the Zoning Ordinance.  Violations of these requirements can be reported to the Zoning Enforcement Officer at 248-437-2240.

Who do I contact with a complaint about a dog?

For complaints regarding the number of dogs, you may contact the Zoning Enforcement Officer at 248-437-2240.  For dogs running loose or dogs barking, please contact the Oakland County Sheriff at 248-437-5600 or Animal Control at 248-391-4102.

What can I do about my neighbor's water draining onto my property, my neighbor mowing on my property, or other similar issues?

Lyon Township is not empowered to act in disputes over property lines and water drainage.  The Township recommends documenting all instances you feel are violations and speak to your neighbor or your attorney.

Who do I contact if I believe someone is hunting illegally?

Lyon Township does not restrict hunting.  State law regulates all hunting activities in the Township.  If you believe someone is hunting illegally, please contact the Oakland County Sheriff at 248-437-5600 or the MDNRE at 800-292-7800.

What do I do if the Township does not have an ordinance regarding a concern I have?

Lyon Township promotes open communication between residents.  If you feel comfortable, you are encouraged to have a discussion with your neighbors about your concerns.  If available, you may also want to check with your local neighborhood association to see if they have any rules that may address your situation.  Associations often address issues that the Township cannot.
